A Brief History of III./S.G. 4
III./S.G. 4 was formed from III./S.K.G. 10 on 1 November 1943. The unit moved to France in November 1943, and from then until Operation OVERLORD on 6 June 1944, III./S.G. 4 rested, re-fitted and trained in France. On D-Day the unit transferred to a forward airfield, and for a short time flew operations to the Allied bridgehead in Normandy. In mid-June the Gruppe moved to central France to take part in anti-partisan operations. At the start of July it moved to the northern sector of the Eastern Front to join Luftflotte 1. At the end of October it withdrew to Germany, and in December took part in the Ardennes offensive, flying its first mission on the afternoon of 7 December. On 1 January 1945 it was one of the units to take part in Unternehmen Bodenplatte. In mid-January III./S.G. 4 moved to the Eastern Front to join Luftflotte 6, and it remained in that region until the end of the war.

Notes on Claimants
Heinz Mihlan was a former fighter pilot, who claimed six victories with the Stab II./J.G. 51 on the Eastern Front in 1941.

Gerhard Limberg had served with 10.(Jabo)/J.G. 2, before moving to III./S.K.G. 10 in Tunisia in February 1943.
